Few things in life are done better in the back of a truck, and Mexican food is the other one. At least, that's what Astoria residents have learned under the spicy tutelage of El Rey Del Taco, ambassador of Tabasco. A few steps off the N/W line at 30th Avenue there resides a shimmering truck in the distance, a beacon of homemade guacamole for the culinary crowd. By now, the El Rey truck has earned its own set of groupies that dangle from the curb hoping for an extra taco and some late night conversation.A highlight of the El Rey experience is not what it gives you but what it leaves you with. Cash. The prices are more fitting a fast food joint while the grub is fresher than the farmer's market. Most items tend to skew heavy on the radishes and never skimp on the sauce, but the tacos come mexican-style, which means soft tortillas, cilantro and zero queso. Blessed with a razor-sharp memory and a staff of hard-working cooks, the ever-present owner/operator has been offering up solid Mexican favorites to Astoria's masses for years. If anyone can give the cloned Greek cafes that line 30th Avenue some stiff competition, it's El Rey's drool-worthy dishes.

It's a great truck - love the platters. Astoria (along with, obviously, Corona and Sunset Park) is one of the only places in NY where good, REAL Mexican food is readily available. I'm from Chicago which is bubbling over with authentic Mexican places around the city and burbs so I was really hurting before I found places in Astoria like Tulcingo Deli, around 28th St. on Braodway. The Bistec ala Mexicana there is one of my favorite meals in all of New York. I'm also a big fan of the place across of from Trade Fair on 30th Avenue. It's open late like the taco truck and has great cheap tacos and quaesadillas. Bravo!
