Cafe Triskell: Further Proof That Anything Wrapped in a Crepe Will Taste Amazing

If your passport's expired or a ticket to Paris is out of financial reach, heading over to Cafe Triskell on 36th Ave. will go a long way to squash even the strongest hankering for French cooking. It also bodes well that Phillippe Fallait doubles as the chef and owner of this small, Easter egg-hued restaurant. True, every inch of the place looks like it was attacked by 1980's pre-teen girls in a fit of Nerds-fueled rage. However, one bite of Cafe Triskell's signature dish will have you appreciating the beauty of magenta and radioactive yellow through a haze of crepey goodness.

Though not its specialty, the restaurant does a brisk business in traditional standbys like quiche Lorraine and a very respectable Croque Monsieur. Then the fun begins. The menu dovetails into both sweet and savory crepes while the specials board is an exercise in classic French cuisine (think: mussels, coq au vin). For the savory crepes, a smorgasbord of meats and cheeses are combined to make such dishes as the Benodet: herb butter, Swiss cheese and cooked-to-perfection mushrooms to make you wish you had a second stomach. Meats like turkey and salmon dominate the "savory" portion of the crepe offerings but there are a number of worthwhile vegetarian options.

If you have any soul whatsoever, you will indulge yourself with sweet crepes. The latter half of the meal should be devoted to anything with chocolate, fruit, and whipped cream- all of which Cafe Triskell offers in abundance. The crepes are quite large and arrive looking like giant pillows drizzled in Nutella. While you should resist the urge to lay your head next to the pile of sweetness, you shouldn't hesitate to mix and match the fruits (pears, strawberries, bananas) with the other add-ins like almonds and various sugar-based sauces. The prices are exceedingly reasonable and there is one, solitary table outside where diners can stretch their legs and waistbands as their picked-clean plates inspire envy in Astoria's passerby.
