Omonia Cafe has risen in the ranks of Zagat enthusiasts over the last five years, who flock to its open-air atrium, a veritable monument to sweet tooth diners everywhere. Why not- the place looks impressive. With its labyrinth of chairs spilling onto the sidewalk and rotating neon displays, Omonia Cafe is one magenta light bulb away from looking like a Disney-themed laser show on most Saturday nights. While the pastries are nothing to scoff at, the restaurant does have the feel of a guy proposing to his fiance on the Yankee's Jumbotron: low on creativity, intimacy, and substance, it must rely on showmanship to seal the deal. The gaudiness would be far easier to overlook if the desserts made good on their promise to send you home with a grin plastered across your Tiramisu-smeared face. No such luck. The whipped cream is all heft and no sweetness. Forget about homemade, the stuff's not even as good as the canned variety and barely gives Cool Whip a run for its money. The Oreo cheesecake leaves you wishing you had saved the money and stopped into Key Food for a package of cookies on your way home instead. The Tiramisu, notoriously difficult to master, bathes in its own liqueur flavor while you dig in vain for at least one non-soggy lady finger. Even the baklava is sub-par compared to Mezzo Mezzo on Ditmars. In fact, if you really want great crepes, sacrifice the ambiance and head a block over towards the subway until you hit EuroDelights. They'll send you home with Nutella-soaked dreams and more money leftover than a night at Omonia Cafe.

I disagree- Omonia is pretty good in the dessert department- at least the last time I went there. And as for the tackniess- that just comes with the territory, your in Queens darling!
Not only is Omonia Cafe the epitome of traditional Greek pastries, but its atmosphere is nothing to laugh at either. In the midst of the filth of Queens, Omonia Cafe provides a trendy and sexy escape with its loungy feel. For over 35 years Omonia Cafe has been a trademark for Astoria in its desserts, catering to thousands. Special visits have been paid from Sarah Jessica Parker, Colin Farrell, and Donald Trump. Producing fresh pastries daily and homemade recipes we can always count on Omonia Cafe to be the cornerstone that keeps Astoria alive.
